The Effect of Music Therapy on the Negative Symptoms and patients¡¯ Experiences of the Schizophre-nics

Abstract
Music has been known to exert deep influences on human mind and this effect has also been noted in the mentally ill patient. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate that music therapy could be effective on the negative symptoms and patients¡¯ subjective experiences of the schizophrenics. Ten hospitalized schizophrenic patients received 20 sessions of music therapy and the other 10 schizophrenics were controls.
The results were as follows:
1. The total scores of the negative symptoms after music therapy were significantly reduced compared with those of control group.
2. The subjective experiences about music therapy in the treated group were significantly increased compared with those of control group.
These results suggest that music therapy could be useful therapeutic intervention for schizophrenics.
